I already paid for plans from another builder. Can you use them?

Maybe. It depends on the existing agreement between you and the builder and / or designer, and who owns the rights to the design. The copyright probably belongs to the original designer, who may have sold you a license for the home to be built for you by the builder you were working with. We have met several customers in this situation, and we often find that when we start talking about what they really want in their home for now and in the future, the plans they have are not really ideal, either because the design was not a true custom design (the designer had simply modified a stock plan), or because their situation has changed since the home was designed. In these cases, it may make sense to start with a new design. Your custom home should be perfect for you, so you definitely won’t want to compromise on the design, and the cost of the design work you have already paid for is relatively small compared to the overall cost of your home. If you bring the plans to us, we can discuss your options, and we can contact the appropriate person to inquire about copyrights.
